Here's an interesting little tid bit I stumbled upon today. Toht was not the first Nazi agent Spielberg equipped with this intimidating yet mundane item. It was actually first used by Capt Von Kleinschmidt (Christopher Lee) to "encourage" Holly Wood (Slim Pickens) on the Japanese sub in Speilberg's 1979 film "1941". It ended up not getting much audience response (i.e. laughs) at a screening, so the scene got deleted. Speilberg decided to try it again-till it did get a laugh. I got this off the Speilberg interview/commentary section on the 1941 Collector's Edition DVD. It has the original filmed scene on it.
