I'm sure you know this already, but there's an interesting thing in the novelization where, if I remember correctly, he really didn't have anywhere else to go, so he was trying to sleep in a small car that he'd rentered or borrowed or something. I remember the heater was busted, or not working right as well. Been awhile since I've read the novels...
