Yeah, it is an interesting question. I never thought about it before. That does explain why he showed up at the right moment. My question, though, is this. If Indy was being shadowed on the China Clipper and didn't know it, and if Toht knew enough about Indy's movements to say "the same thing your friend Dr. Jones wanted," then how did Indy end up surprising them?

It makes sense though that if Indy has just handed over his entire bankroll to Marion, he's going to keep an eye on it until he gets his headpiece. We know from his dealings with Lao Che that he is skilled in the art of negotiation. Although now that I think about it, that $3,000 couldn't have been his entire bankroll, or else he never would have been able to book passage to Cairo, and thence to England.
