I think that Indy used his brains more in the Last Crusade than the other two. He used the grail diary primarily to find the grail. So as Indy has aged 15 years since the Last Crusade it would make sense if in the fourth Indy movie he uses his brain even more. That makes the build up of the story for Indy 4 all the more exciting.
