When you assume something so basic, you seldomly question yourself and just assume. You said yourself that authors were calling it that when they wrote the story. It's not that they weren't reading the backstory before they wrote, just that they assumed that the title was 'on the.' It's just difference in the way you learned the language. I would say "on the plane," but if you heard me say that it would bring a different image to your mind than what I was meaning, eventhough you would still know exactly what I was meaning.
