I'm no sound expert but I do follow the home theater hobby a bit. From what I have read, THX is a standard of quality that can refer to a theater's equipment, not a format. THX certified equipment must meet certain electrical and acoustical properties- the schematics are submitted to THX for approval- for a fee of course. This applies for home theater equipment as well. Actual Movie Theaters are inspected for screen brigthness and acoustics.

THX also can refer to the quality of a home video. The video makes THX certification when certain standards of picture and sound quality are met. THX started becuse Lucas (and others) were dissapointment with the quality of many theaters, feeling that the filmmakers intentions were lost in many cases. They wanted to create a standard so that films could be presented consistently in different theaters.
