The truth is that while many pieces appear to have been stored in vaults prior to the US attack, and others were removed for 'safekeeping' and are accounted for, some of the objects that local people have 'returned' to the museum appear to be fakes taken from the gift shop. And there is still no accurate count of what was taken; the figure '29' comes from a list of the most obvious and valuable pieces. Four of these have been traced but not yet recovered. So the reality is that the entire museum was not looted, but many pieces are gone. And the concomitant reality is that the US still dropped the ball at the outset. And anyone that insists on simplifying the situation to one where there was a choice between "saving Iraqi children" or "protecting a museum/library" should reevaluate that naive view of current events.
So chill the invective, hat guy.
