I don't know if following your father's hard work and (basically) instruction manual makes you the most smart archaeologist on the planet...BUT, he does display a lot of street smarts and intelligence in all of the films.

In 'Raiders' he displays a working knowledge of physics! Everything from the Idol pedastal to hitting the Nazi motorcycle at the right angle with the truck (Hey - geometry!). Indy was a smart guy in that movie, and a smart ass for that matter.

I look forward to Indy IV, and although Indy will be a little less athletic in it, I'm sure they won't stray from the Indy we all know and love. It's his brain and balls which make him such an enduring chracter.
