Tidewater, South Carolina - 1955
"That doesn't look too promising," Miller said sarcastically, glancing out the window of the beat-up pickup at the darkening sky.
"Supposed to be big," his friend answered, piloting the rusty hulk around a fallen branch. The wind howled around the pickup as it careened over the sandy road. "So this better be quick," he added, "or we're going to be stuck out there with no cover."
"You'd think the man would use his brain," said Miller. "Or those other fellows with him. At least we're packin' up, and got all the equipment back first."
"Yeah. I'd just like to know what the hell an archaeologist thinks he's gonna find out here."
"A couple a drenched foreigners!" Miller joked.
The dig site was fraught with tension as Miller and Jabey drove up. The air sped inland from the ocean; telltale droplets fell amongst the swaying trees. Down by the shore, the crash of swelling waves intermixed with excited shouts.
"Over here, over here!" The exclamation was echoed in three foreign languages.
A small group gathered around a three-foot wide test trench. The excited shout had come from within it it. A flash of lighting bathed the section of coastline and dig in an eerie light.
"Hurry Jones! The storm is on us!"
"I can feel it!" he yelled excitedly, plunging his arm into the soft soil. The ocean was only a few feet away, evidence that the site would soon be lost to erosion. By now all vestiges of archaeological exploration had vanished - as the rain began to fall Jones simply flung the mud over his shoulder. With it went fragments of clay pottery that would spark a sensation throughout the academic world - if only anyone present cared about them.
"I've got it!!" Jones yelled, pulling an oblong object out of the mud. The rain was coming down in torrents now, and the waves were pulling parts of the beach into the churning ocean. Thunder crackled as he wiped off the mud. Members of the dig ran for cover. Only the three men surrounding Jones remained in the terrific gale, and as another bolt of lightening rent the sky Jones triumphantly held the object over his head, the bright light revealing deep grooves along its surface:
