Chapter 10
Indy was looking over the material Francois had left for him in the library of the chateau. He couldnít pinpoint where the spear would be when Julianne appeared,
ėFind anything?î
ėWhat?î looking up at the woman with fading red hair, ėNothing yet.î
ėWhat exactly do you know?î
ėPractically nothing. All I know is that some Nazi sold the spear to a man in France. And the spear was lost. No one knows itsí existence.î
ėThere might be a way,î she said.
ėAny ideas?î
ėDo you know what the Naziís connection was to Hitler? That can get you in the right direction.î
Indy stared at the woman and realized she was right. Indy got on the phone to Francois for contacts to the German Embassy to find out what he needed to know.
----
Kate arrived in Paris two days later. When she arrived at Paris International, bag in hand, she looked up and saw her uncle. He ran towards her, and gave her a big hug.
ėGood to see you too, Uncle.î
ėKaterina,î as he kissed both of her cheeks, ėWe were worried about you. Your aunt wanted to fly out to New York right away.î
ėIím fine,î smiling a bit, ėand so is Lauren.î
ėIs that what you named her?î Kate nodded as Francois said, ėBeautiful name.î
ėThanks, itsí after my grandmother on my dadís side.î
ėWhy not after Celeste?î
ėBecause I know she wouldnít have wanted me to do that,î as they walked through the airport to the car, ėWhereís Indy?î
ėBusy. He hasnít been here since he got a lead yesterday.î
ėWhat lead?î
ėHeís located the man who sold the spear to his benefactorís father. Heís in Germany, I believe.î
ėI see,î as Francois said, ėHow long are you staying?î
ėA few days. I have business matters to attend to.î
ėFor the company youíre opening in Paris?î
ėExactly,î grinning. After three years, Kate had finally got the land and builders to make the company offices and recording studios. She had made a big name of her music company, having additional branches of Milan, Hong Kong, and Tokyo as well. The whole family was proud of her of what she had done.
ėThat building will give Paris the employment it so desperately needs.î
ėAre you suggesting a job, Uncle? Iím already offering one to AndrČÖî
ėWhat is AndrČ going to do for you?î
ėSince he knows Paris better than I do, Iíve giving him the job with anyone making contacts with our company. I hope heíd like it.î
ėHe canít stop talking about it, Katerina,î smiling, ėAnd I donít need a job. At my age, Iím too old to work.î
Kate had to suppress a laugh. Francois was about 80 years old, and her aunt about 73, but they didnít look their ages. ėMy grandfather worked up until his death last year at 91,î she reminded him, ėAnd I intended to do the same thing until my death.î
ėAt least youíre not alone anymore,î as they drove to the chateau, ėThat worried us the most. Katerina, not married nor having a male companionship, working to death with her career since you were 22.î
ėAlmost 28 years,î she mused, ėItís hard to believe Iíll be 50 next year.î
ėI believe that,î chuckling a bit, ėEspecially with having three young ones.î
Kate smiled weakly as they approached the house, memories of her life flooding back.
Chapter 11
Indy was in Berlin, talking to the head of the Embassy.
ėNow, Dr. Jones,î an older man said to him, ėyou need to find someone who was Hitlerís confidante. Do you know who it might be?î
Indy shook his head as the man looked in the book and said, ėThereís one possibility. One of Hitlerís favorite servants could have done that. His name is Manfred von Tripp.î
ėWhere would he be nowadays?î
ėHe was executed a week after Hitlerís death. Most of that army were killed in one way or another.î
ėTerrific,î Indy groaned.
ėBut wait,î reading in the book, ėHe had a next of kin of sorts ņ a Miss Serena Trevelli. His fiancČe.î
ėWhere would she be?î
ėThe name is Italian. Possibly Rome. Since youíre related to Mr. DíAnjou, I can make some inquiries.î
ėThanks,î as the man left to make the phone call as Indy realized, ėCan I use the phone?î
The man pointed to another extension in the room. Indy made the appropriate connection and heard,
ėAllo?î
ėJulianne? Itís Indy.î
ėIndy! Did you find what you were looking for?î
ėI believe so,î looking at the ambassador, ėIs Kate there?î
ėSheís at the office building with AndrČ. Do you want the number?î
ėThatís alright. Just tell her Iíll be in Italy. Iíll call.î
ėWill do,î as Julianne hung up and Indy talked to the ambassador about his findings.
Chapter 12
Kate was looking out of the window of the Parisian skyline. Twirling her wedding and engagement rings, she kept wondering where Indy was as AndrČ came from behind.
ėHello, Katerina.î
ėHi, AndrČ,î not facing him, ėGoing home?î
ėI was checking to see if you would join me to dinner.î
ėThanks, but Iíd rather not,î a worried look on her face.
He clasped her shoulders and said, ėYour husband will be fine.î
Kate nodded and said, ėGo on home, AndrČ. Iíll meet you there.î
ėAdieu, Katerina,î as he left. Kate looked at the wall next to her and saw the promotional picture taken more than 25 years ago when she was playing in a band. Christ, Iíve gotten old; she mused as she heard the telephone ringing.
ėAllo?î Kate asked.
ėDr. Tyler, this is Signor Diablo.î
ėYes, signor, I remember you. How are the business in Rome?î
ėThat is why I have called. We need your help here. Can you arrange to arrive in Rome tomorrow?î
ėTomorrow?î as she looked at her watch and said, ėI will call the airline for the first available flight and meet you there.î
ėThank you, madam,î as she hung up.
Kate picked up the phone and waited for an answer.
ėAllo?î
ėAriana? Itís Katerina. Tell Julianne and Francois I have to leave for Rome on business.î
ėWhat about your clothes?î
ėI have plenty at the suite in Rome,î she replied, ėJust tell my husband when he calls where I am.î
ėOui, Katerina.î
----
The following morning, Indy was walking to the address he was given at the German Embassy. He stopped at a massive building and rang the bell. A maid opened it and said,
ėSi?î
ėIs Miss Trevelli here?î Indy said in Italian
ėSignora Serena? She is out,î the maid answered, ėCan I help you?î
ėWhen is she due back?î
ėNot until this evening. Iíll come back then.î
Indy left the house and was walking in the plazzo, wondering where to go to when he realized that Kate had owned a branch of her music company and a suite in Rome. But where is it? He wondered. Indy saw someone next to him and asked in Italian,
ėScuzzi, do you where Tyler Musicals is?î
ėEveryone knows where it is, signor. You are new to Italia?î
Indy nodded as the man said, ėSee that building right there? Itís the headquarters.î
ėGrazie,î as he handed the man a few coins and headed to the building.
---
Indy must have looked disheveled to the receptionist, who wanted to call the police as he calmly explained,
ėI am Dr. Tylerís husband.î
ėHusband?î her eyes widened as she picked up the phone and talked to the person on the other line. The receptionist smiled and said, ėGo on in to the office there. Someone will help you.î
Indy went into the room, looking around the office at the mahogany desk and pictures of Jack, Steven and Kate on the walls. He noticed a bar in the corner, helped himself to a drink as the door opened,
ėMay I help you?î a female voice asked.
Indy turned around and dropped his glass in surprise as he saw his wife standing there in the doorway.
Chapter 13
ėWhat the hell are you doing here?î Indy asked in disbelief.
ėI got called on business to Rome yesterday. I only arrived this morning,î her blue eyes flashing at him.
ėSo you didnít know I was here?î
ėShould I have?î she asked.
ėI called your aunt and told her.î
ėI didnít get the message,î she replied, ėI got a call from the office about the technicalities here so I hopped on a plane and headed here.î
ėI see,î as Kate looked at him and asked, ėWhat are you doing here?î
ėI got a led on where the next of kin would be.î
ėIn Rome?î
Indy nodded as Kate asked, ėWhatís the name?î
ėSerena Trevelli.î
Kateís face softened a bit and said, ėI know her.î
ėYou do?î surprised.
ėSheís the sister of the manager here,î she replied, ėWhat did she do?î
ėSheís the Naziís confidante.î
ėLittle Serena? Indy, sheís only 26 years old.î
ėWhich makes her about 18 when the war ended,î Indy mused, ėDo you where she is?î
ėSheís out and about the countryside. Leaves in the mornings and doesnít get back until nightfall.î
The phone buzzed on her desk and Kate picked it up, ėHello?î
Kateís eyes widened and said, ėSignor Diablo, how are the plans for the recording studio?î
Kate nodded and looked at her husbandís face and said, ėSignor Diablo, can you come to my office? Itís quite urgent,î as she waited a minute, ėGrazie,î as hung up.
ėWho was that?î
ėThe head of this office, besides me of course.î
ėWhy did you ask him to come in?î
ėHeís Serenaís brother,î as the door opened and an Italian man entered.
ėAh, Signor Diablo,î she gestured with her hand, ėMay I present my husband ---ė
ėDr. Jones!î the man rushed forward to shake Indyís hand; ėIt is an honor. I have read your many accomplishments.î
He looked at Kate and said, ėI didnít realize he was your husband.î
ėOur marriage was not publicized as much, signor,î Kate said, ėMy husband is here to ask about Serena.î
ėWhat has she done?î
Chapter 14
ėWhat has she done?î asked Diablo.
ėIt appears,î Kate said, ėthat was a consort of a Nazi confidante of Hitlerís.î
The man paled and said, ėDonít fire me, Dr. Tyler. I need this job ---ė
ėAndreas, I wouldnít do that,î Kate said, ėYouíre the best manager I have ever seen.î
ėAnd,î Indy said, ėshe wouldnít. Not for this matter.î
ėIt was a long time ago,î Diablo started, ėSerena was only a child about fifteen or so. She met a man while he was stationed here in Rome. A Nazi commander. Our parents didnít like the Nazis, as well as I. But she insisted he was good and in time they fell in love.î
Diablo sighed a bit, ėThey wrote letters to each other frequently. He even promised to marry her when the war was over. But he was killed shortly afterwards. Execution style, I believe. Serena was crushed.î
ėI would imagine on a sixteen year old girl,î Kate said and then looked at Indy. Her husbandís face was unemotional as always as he asked,
ėDoes she still have the letters?î
ėI believe so, but she would not. I have never have seen them.î
ėThank you, Andreas,î Kate said softly.
Diablo stood up and said, ėIím not fired?î
ėYour position is safe,î she said as he left the office. He turned to her and said,
ėWhy donít you join me for dinner around eight oíclock? You can talk to Serena then.î
ėSure,î Indy said, as the man walked out.
