Chapter VIII The Lions Den
Berlin
Indiana lifted his head above the water he could see several feet ahead of him, the air was cold and the sky grew darker, he scanned the area, there was a forest nearby, if they could get to the road they could find their way. He realized where he was now; it was probably a park of some sort. He once again scanned the area, making sure no patrolmen were in sight, and slowly swam on. He could only give out shallow breaths, the water was freezing, and his lungs were tight, almost shut closed, he could see his breath through the crisp air. He then continued to swim, his muscles nearly giving out with each and every dip, he was sure something was broken, or maybe everything thing, he was sure most of his ribs were broken; after this it may be a miracle I ever walk again, Indiana though.
“What are you thinking about” Goodsport whispered.
“Nothing. I don’t know, but we should be careful. Let me go first” Indiana whispered back.
They began swimming again, the water was freezing cold, and one could easily catch pneumonia. They then pulled themselves onto the ground, it was wet and muddy, Indy felt the front of his jacket become caked in the slimy green mess; they surveyed the land before them, it was covered in dense forest. Nothing but green, they also saw near the edges, small picnic tables and other items, and a walking trail, footprints of both human and animal ranging in size. Indiana cocked his head to the side; he heard the howl of a dog he looked to his left and right. ‘It was the patrol’, he thought to himself. If they find them here they could be tortured, or killed; he turned around to see Goodsport getting over the chill from the water.
He whispered to Goodsport, “We had better hurry I heard one of the patrol’s dog’s howl”
Goodsport shivered and then gave a weak reply “Y-Y-Yes I heard t–t-th-them too, we Mah-mah-mah-may be able to da-da-d-dodge them, only pr-pr-problem is we may get lah-luh-luh-lost and a-a-a-as ya-ya-you s-s-s-see its very large and duh-dark, possibly duh-dangerous” Goodsport was about to say something else but Indy silenced him. He couldn’t talk straight through the chill of the water, and it began to annoy Indy.
Indiana walked carefully forward, he could see nothing, and there were no lights or anything to guide him, who he knew was good because he may be seen, the howls began growing louder.
Goodsport pulled out his knife, he held it in front of him if anything came he would be ready.
Now the howls grew louder and he could hear German speech, Indiana began taking deeper breaths. The sound grew louder, until he was able to make out
“You there, halt” It was a German, he and the other Germans proceeded, the snarling dogs leaped at the end of their leashes tugging to get away. “What are you doing here, no one is allowed out at this time of night” The German said.
“Suh-Suh-Sorry wa-we h-had to take a wa-w-walk… uh our w-wives kicked us out” Goodsport lied. Then started trying to walk away. His speech began getting better, of course he was also getting warmer, now that he had been out of the water long enough!
“Stop, hold on you’re coming with us,” The German said.
The man at the back pocketed a piece of paper he looked down at it, his eyes bulged, he walked to the head patrolman, then whispered in German “You may want to take a look at this.”
The German looked down; he saw the face of Indy, Goodsport, and Meagan. “Soo, you are the spies, kill them” He began to draw his gun.
As the German was drawing his gun with one quick thrust Indy clutched the fierce man’s arm. With his other hand he wrenched the gun to the ground, then just as quickly his fist shot forward knocking the man to the ground.
“RUN!” Indy shouted toward Goodsport!
The Nazi’s let the dogs loose they growled and snarled then ran after their prey already tasting the blood. Indiana and Goodsport kept running despite the dogs and shots behind them, then the Nazi’s began running too with their guns blazing, for only momentarily would the gun fire would illuminate the images ahead of them. The brush swept across Indy’s face. Goodsport, trying to push away the branches and leaves, tripped over a large log, he flew several feet to the ground landing on his back, Indiana glanced back and then turned to go help his friend to his feet, by then the Germans had caught up. One dog began biting at Goodsports ribs tearing away at his flesh, Goodsport took his knife and thrust it into the dog’s leg, and he didn’t want to kill it, just injure it. Indiana uncoiled his whip, the Germans got closer not seeing the snakelike weapon ready to strike. Their guns were pointed at Indy and Goodsport, Indiana cracked the whip in the air, which got the Nazi’s attention, which had them all pointing their guns at Indy they were lined in single file. Indy smiled and hoped it worked he thrust his whip, which grabbed the last Germans rifle, gave a quick tug, twisting that gun knocking the other guns to their side just as the trigger was pulled and one by one each other murdered each other. Indy then gave another thrust, which sent the rifle flying towards him. He grabbed it then shot the last living man.
Goodsport was still fighting the dogs off him, Indiana gave another loud crack then whipped the leg of the dog and one by one sent the dog’s whimpering away. By then Indiana heard a whistle, “shit” Indy thought to himself “they must have heard the gun shots, c’mon Goodsport were getting ya the hell outta here”. He pulled Goodsport up and began running deeper into the forest, he pulled out his gun ready for a shoot out. “All right” he thought, “you sun of a bitches will have to kill me to catch me.” He ran onwards. Finally he could see a clearing, it was the road, and he surveyed the area, nothing, not a single hiding spot.
Then he saw it up ahead he saw a small bait shop. He ran up to it, he saw that it was locked, he ran around back and busted in one of the windows. He then pulled Goodsport inside; he closed the curtain hoping no one would notice the broken glass. The Germans ran past the shop, Indiana smiled then waited for them to go on down the road, then he pulled Goodsport outside, Goodsport was bleeding badly they would have to wait before they could complete their mission. He waited a while making sure it was safe. He dragged Goodsport across the street. He waited for a car to drive by then proceeded to help Goodsport stagger to the other side, clutching him by the shoulder walking him around. He found a bench. He laid Goodsport across the bench. He ripped up Goodsports jacket into shreds and then tightly bound it across Goodsports chest to stop the bleeding. He then helped Goodsport walk across the sidewalk of the barren street. He saw what looked to be, a hospital, he dragged Goodsport inside. The doctor immediately took him in.
“Sir, We will need to take him to a Hospital in London, but don’t worry we will treat him as best we can here, and as soon as the helicopter arrives we will take him in. Was it the Nazi’s?” The Doctor asked Indiana
“Yeah sure, take extra careful care of him, he was my partner. Yes it was the Nazi’s, why how did you know?” Indiana replied. This was very peculiar to Indiana, in America; you had to sign a hundred page questionnaire before you could see the doctor. Then you had to wait in the office for hours just to get someone to check your temperature. The by the time the doctor was in, your sicknesses would have vanished and the doctor would simply send you away. But here you were immediately taken into care with friendly service… something was wrong, besides it was only a flesh wound. And how come they hadn’t taken him too? He was in just as bad or worse shape!
“Oh, they’ve been terrorizing everyone, I am totally against them, and if you’re a spy I support you.” The Doctor said. “We will take utmost care of your partner.”
What the heck is going on, something is seriously wrong. But, he saw in the doctors eyes, he was trustworthy, there was just something, some trustworthy force.
“Uh yeah, sure” Indy stuttered “I gotta go,” Indiana walked down the stairs of the hospital and out the door. He then walked down the street. As he was walking he saw a group of German Soldiers walking down the street, he took another look. Indiana saw to his surprise, they were drunk, Indiana stood there motionless as they walked by paying him no attention. Indiana then proceeded to walk through the deserted street.
He kept walking; he didn’t know what to look for. Finally an arm clutched his shoulder and dragged him into a back alley.
