Temple Of Doom Question

In the excellent opening sequence, Mohawn, Indy's friend pretending to be a waiter gets shot. Now, Short Round is supposed to be waiting for his buddies outside to pick him up, and when Indy arrives with Willie Scott, he never asks where is Mohawn? That doesn't make any sense.
