This goes back to the adventure serials which were shown each week between feature movies in the 30's to 50's. They featured a central character who got in a jam from which there was no conceivable means of escape, and then ended at that point each week. The series continued from week to week, so kids like me would be sure to come back the next week to see how the hero got out of the jam.
