That opening sequence is an homage to the old Busby Berkeley musicals. It's not meant to make a lot of sense. It's exactly like the forementioned musicals - they're just gigantic production numbers.

It's a good opening for the film, I think. It immediately establishes the film as an entirely different kind of film to Raiders.
