why does Indy wear the bag on the inside of the jacket?

What if the P-38 didn't go off and hit the driver of the tank in the head? Indy coudn't escape the stone wall in front of him while hanging on one of the tank's side guns by his bag's strap. He could escape no problem.....if the bag was worn on the outside.
