One of Indy's supposed inspirations, Mr. Richard Halliburton (read the books, live the adventures) disappeared in a Pacific storm while sailing a Chinese junk from San Francisco to Shanghai. Or was it the other way around? One of his posthumously published books reprints the last radio transmission from the junk; Halliburton says something like "storm coming, all looks good", something fairly jaunty anyway.
Indy's ending could be more prosaic, being institutionalized by his kids and dying in a tragic applesauce accident...
