Short Round was supposed to be a girl?

I remember reading somewhere that Short Round was supposed to be a girl, but it wasn't right at that time to expose a young girl to that type of horror and stuff. Did anyone else read this? ANd what is it was a young girl? How woul dthat of changed the story?
