"This belongs in a museum..."

Why does the Cross of Coronado belong in a museum? I mean if you hire someone to find a relic, and they find it in a lost cave, what right does some 16 year old boy scout have to take it from you just to put it in a museum? And how did young Indy know what Fedora and his crew planned to do with it in the first place? Maybe they were going to open their own museum.
