A question about the Flying Wing...

On this forum I get the impression that there really was no such plane as a Flying Wing. I'd never heard this before and just assumed that it was based on a real plane. Then today I was looking at a book about the magic of Lucasarts and they seemed to imply that the Flying Wing was fake also. So I'd like to know, was there ever really a Flying Wing? Was it something that the Nazis were working on but never fully developed? Or is it completely a figment of Lucas/Spielberg and their FX crews imagination??
