: : Chapter 16
: : Lauren awoke in her tent a while later. She felt a throbbing pain on the back of her head and tried to touch it but noticed her hands handcuffed to the cot. She looked in disbelief and heard,
: : “Miss Jones, so glad you’re up.”
: : Lauren saw Donovan standing at the entrance to tent. She groaned and asked, “What do you want?”
: : “Tell me, how does a girl like you get into some much trouble?”
: : “Must be my upbringing,” she muttered.
: : Donovan smiled and sat next to the cot. He stroked her hair and said, “Your mother must have been a beautiful woman.”
: : “She was as well as smart and intelligent.”
: : “But you’re too much of a troublemaker.”
: : “Is that why you handcuffed me?”
: : “It was for your own good,” he said as he got up, “If you behave, maybe I’ll let you go.”
: : Donovan left as Lauren snarled and tried to figure out how to get out when a guard brought in her father in handcuffs. Indy noticed his daughter up and asked,
: : “Are you ok?”
: : “I’ve been better,” as she struggled with her bonds.
: : The guard came in to handcuff Indy to his cot. The guard left as Indy looked at her and said,
: : “Are you sure?”
: : “I’d be better to get out of here.”
: : Indy smiled and Lauren asked, “What does Donovan have against you?”
: : “Nothing much, I just killed his father.”
: : “What?”’ her eyebrows jumped.
: : “Not deliberately, Lauren. It happened before I met and married your mother.”
: : “What happened?”
: : “He drank from a false Grail and died.”
: : Lauren looked at him and said, “Did you try to stop it?”
: : “No,” he said weakly, “He almost killed your grandfather, Laurie.”
: : Lauren looked at him and said,“You haven’t called me that in years.”
: : Indy smiled fondly and said, “I know.”
: : Lauren was quiet for a minute as Indy asked, “Why do you hate me?”
: : Lauren looked at him and said, “What?”
: : “You heard me,” sternly.
: : “You never were around, Henry,” she replied, “while I was growing up.”
: : “I was around.”
: : “No, you weren’t,” she accused.
: : “You know I travel, Lauren.”
: : “That doesn’t count,” glaring at him.
: : Indy sighed and said, “You kids and your mother are very important to me.”
: : Lauren stared at him in disbelief and Indy said, “I loved your mother. When she came into my life, I was finally happy. And then Eric and Michael were born and then you.”
: : “How come you didn’t take us with you?”
: : “I didn’t want to risk your lives. I almost lost your mother four times until last year.”
: : “Four times?”
: : “Your mother and I broke off our relationship after we graduated from school. Then we met after a long time, got engaged and married in India, where she was almost killed by a mobster, and then the time is Egypt…” he faded off.
: : “That’s three. What was the fourth one?” she demanded.
: : He looked at her and said softly, “The day you born.”
