Henry Sr. senile, baby?

I was watching Last Crusade Friday night because my mojo's still missing, and something bugged the crap out of me, baby. When Indy and Henry stop the motorcycle at that crossroads deal Henry wants to go to Berlin to get the diary back. He says they need it because of the 3 challenges written in it. Indy asks why the hell he can't remember them and Henry says he wrote them in the diary so that he "wouldn't have to remembah!" Now if Grail Lore was this guy's obsession for 40 years, wouldn't something that important sink in? Is he getting senile in his old age or somethin'? It just doesn't add up...I smell a conspiracy babies, yeah!
