I also saw it when it originally aired (haven't had the chance to see it recently, though). As far as I can remember, you are absolutely correct. Indy decided to go back to the States and go to college, while Remy decided to keep looking.

As far as I know, that's the last the two saw each other (although they didn't actually state that in the story).
