I think, that Indy's main goal was the arc - not Marion. Arc
was more important and that's why he did the things you critisize.
As moving towards the end, he shouts: "All I want is the girl!"
and still wants to see arc opened. Finally he must admit that
love is more important than his own archeological interests.
