I don't think there was any REAL reason for having Temple take place before Raiders. And because of that, we have another contradiction: at the end of Temple, Indy "sees the magic of the rock". If this were the case, I don't think the line in Raiders "You sound like my mother! We've known each other for a long time; I don't believe in magic, a lotta superstitious hocus-pocus."
As for the swordsman reference in Temple, it's just a reference for the viewer. It doesn't really have any bearing on the character, although one might look at the Raiders scene and think "hey, it works for him this time".
