Also they filmed a scene with Indy lashed to the periscope but it ended up on the cutting room floor. If Indy had ridden to the island strapped to the periscope and dragged through the water he would've died of hypothermia just as he would've drowned if they'd dived below periscope depth. A no-win situation either way.
