You're right. Back in the thirties all men wore hats and the fedora was probably the most popular style for men. Indy had to have owned several since we see what a beating his hats take. Right at the beginning of "Raiders" we see his fedora get covered with dust and cobwebs then get soaked in river water and blown dry in a funky shape on Jock's plane. That hat had to go straight in the trash when Indy got home.
I saw a documentary about JFK recently and they mentioned that men wore hats regularly until he was elected president. When men saw that he rarely ever wore a hat, they stopped buying them and nearly killed the hat industry.
Strange what will start or kill a trend. Clark Gable nearly killed the T-shirt industry when men saw that he wasn't wearing an undershirt in "It Happened One Night."
Then when Indy came along the fedora got back in style (though, of course, not to the degree that it once was) You can be sure none of these men knew what they were starting when they innocently donned (or didn't don) these items and it doesn't always happen. Did anybody run out and buy one of those straw Amish hats that Harrison wore in "Witness?"
