If you want a plausible explanation:
If Indy's revolver really was a Triple-Lock as some have suggested, then it was chambered for either .44 Spl., .455, or .45 LC.
Most of the other firearms were of a much smaller caliber than those.
If you want the truth:
Foley artists will have the hero's arms sound louder to make it seem as if the hero is more powerful. Subtle is the art of movie making...
