I had the same problem with it. It was just confusing.
The closest thing to an explanation I've gotten is a mysterious comment that McCoy had intended some sort of time-travel to happen in the book and Bantam made him remove some of it.
That didn't satisfy me, but there it is.

: just a quick question...in IJ and the secret of the sphinx, what was going on with indy's aging? is he young again at the end or what? i understand the whys but not the hows.
