Temple of the Forbidden Eye

My in-laws just returned from Disneyland, and knowing of my fascination for Indy, they brought me a coffee mug from the IJ ride. (Not an official Indy fedora...a freakin' coffee mug!)

I don't know much about the ride beyond some of its technical aspects. Is there a back story to the Temple of the Forbidden Eye? Is it available anywhere? How does it fit into the Indy mythos?
