You know, I was there the week it opened in 1981. Nobody had any idea who Indy was; they just saw this character who appeared to have ice water running through his veins. The fact he was so scared of the snake after all they had seen him do without flinching up to that point, the line "Come on, show a little backbone, will ya." was so ironic, everyone just howled laughing. It loses its impact with familiarity with the Indy character, I guess.
