You're right. Absolutely no time passes so we can't just right it off to Indy recoiling the whip offscreen. It just disappears. He could've just dropped it but then he'd be without it for the rest of the movie since he certainly didn't rescue it from the fire. A definite film flub.
I've seen this movie at least 30 times and never noticed it. I feel like a dope.
