I don't think he was still considered a "mentor" after they changed him from Abner Ravenwood to Fedora. I think he was just supposed to be Indy's "inspiration". We see how alienated Indy is from his father, so when Fedora takes a moment to tell him it's okay to be upset and gives him his hat, I think its supposed to have a profound effect on Young Indy. Fedora allows him to lose with a little self-respect.
