Well, I didn't "TPM" tried to be any more "kid-friendly" than the other "Star Wars" movies (except "The Empire Strikes Back") but that's not my point right now.
Anyway, just because a kid is in a movie doesn't mean that the movie is (only) doing it just to aim for the kid audience (look at "The Sixth Sense"). It just might fit the story to have those kids in there and it doesn't necessarily reflect badly on the adult characters. In "TPM" for example, had they put Anakin at an age closer to Luke, leaving his mother wouldn't have had nearly as much of an impact as it did (or, more importantly, will in "Episodes II & III") on Anakin. Qui-Gon didn't seem foolish or immature in "TPM" (quite the opposite. He wanted Anakin, who is obviously no ordinary kid, to live up to his destiny). Also, Indy letting Short Round tag along after he caught him stealing from him shows that he can be a nice guy. As for the "Jurassic Park"'s, in the first movie it just seems natural that in a movie about a dinosaur theme park, there would be kids involved (after all, there would be no better way to test the appeal) and in "The Lost World", Malcolm's daughter snuck along and the first thing he does when he finds out is tell her that she is going back right away and to stay inside that trailer, so I can hardly see that as reflecting badly on him.
Of course, I know the whole issue of "kid appeal" does play a role in these kinds of movies, but I don't think it is always the dominating factor.
