From what I've heard "Episode II" will be darker than "Menace" (which had some dark moments but mostly kept things light in order to show the more peaceful and diplomatic period before everything fell apart), but it won't be REALLY dark because it apparently focuses on the love story between Anakin and Amidala. "Episode III" will be the darkest of all the "Star Wars" movies for obvious reasons (Anakin goes to the Dark Side, Amidala is somehow killed and most of the Jedi's are killed).
