Last Crusade Blooper??

The Last Crusade was on cable recently, and I thought I had caught
a blooper (being a poor college student, I have, as yet, been unable to go out and buy the trilogy). Anyways, in the library scene, Indy climbs up the spiral staircase and we see a script Roman Numeral "X". After he climbs down and starts banging away at the center of the "X", it looked to me like the "X" had reverted to a simple block letter. Maybe the angle makes it look this way, I'm not sure. Anybody ever notice this, or am I just seeing things?
