All directors, if you see enough of their work, have these little trademarks, what poker players call a tell. For Hitchcock there is always a shot of a train in all his movies plus his own little cameo appearances. Stanley Kubrick always has a scene set in the bathroom. Sometimes it's really subtle and only noticeable if you really study their work.
I had a friend who could tell by listening to an album who the drummer was just because she recognized their personal style.
