maybe he hid in the torpedo bay and since the nazis were not in a combat situation nobody was in that section of the U-Boat. "You are not in a position to ask for anything. We will take what we wish, then decide weather to blow your ship from the water." It they did, im prity sure they would have used the deck gun rather than waste a torpedo.
