This has been brought up before and I agree that the scene, technically, doesn't really make sense. If you search for an answer, you could say it prepared him for the scene in "Raiders", but I doubt that was the intent. I'd say when they were going over the finished film, Spielberg and Lucas noticed it, but probably thought the joke was more important than the inconsistency.
