The way I understand the Han Solo thing they froze Han in "Empire" because no one was sure if Harrison Ford would return for "Jedi" after starring in "Raiders." He agreed to play Han once more so they had Luke and Leia rescue him from Jabba.
As far as Indy dying in Indy IV, I don't think we have anything to worry about there. Even if Spielberg and Lucas wanted to kill him off they would have to get permission from the studio that finances the filming of Indy IV. Since Lucas isn't paying for filming the movie out of his own pocket like with "Phantom Menace" he's not as free to do certain things with the movie as he would be otherwise.
I remember when Stallone made "Rocky 5" he wanted Rocky to die at the end and the studio said no way.
The studios are afraid to kill off a franchise character like Indy or Rocky or James Bond because a downer ending will hurt them financially on the last film and possibly on all the films in the series.
They killed Kirk off from the "Star Trek" series because they had the "Next Generation" cast ready to take over the franchise. Plus all Trekkers know that any dead character in "Star Trek" might still be revived at some later date.
Anyway, rest easy, there'll be no death of Indy in Indy IV.
