A LC Question...

I'm currently writing up a Grail Diary, but I've found a few gaps in my understanding of the movie. Was there ever an explanation of the significance of the Roman Numerals? I'm figuring it may have just been a way to tie in the "X marks the spot" irony. I figure the stain glass window was made before the second brother had died, so it wasn't specially made for the church/library. Any thoughts?
