It's a self-policed naming convention. It looks like Steve managed to set up a location on a web server called lucasfilm.net so that he could send email from it. I would be surprised if he didn't receive a nasty-gram either from Lucasfilms directly, or from an attorney somewhere in Marin county, ordering him to "cease and desist" using the Lucasfilms name.
