There are several inflation calculators on the web. One gave the result: "An equivalent amount of $5000 in 1936 dollars would be $58114.26 in 1998 dollars." So, that's a pretty big chunk of change, but not in the "set for life" range.

BTW, yeah Belloq got hosed on the watch deal. $10 in 1936 is equivalent to $116.23 today. But what do you expect from a pompous Frenchman?
