In the Special Edition, Richard Dreyfuss tours the ship. We, the audience, get to see what he sees on the spacecraft. Lots of amazing special effects. It adds 5 or 10 minutes to the film.

Hope this helps. I think you can still rent the Special Edition at video stores.
