The obvious solution? Mormon archaeologists discover proof of ancient non-Native American civilization in western US. It is evidence of early Tibetan contacts with Anasazi people, which is then captured by Mao's agents and taken to Sian-king to create some kind of mystical bomb or somesuch... Indy saves the day...

Always figured Indy as a Mormon... what's with the Utah residency, anyway?
