Philip Kaufman worked a little bit on the character of Indiana Jones, but in the long run, it wasn't that huge. Lucas talked to Kaufman about the character of Indiana Jones back in 1973. The most significant thing that Philip Kaufman gave to the creation of Indy was suggesting that Indy go after the Ark of the Covenant.
