: : : Hey guys, remember that poem that Young Indy was asked to read in Trenches of Hell? That's a really good poem. Very moving. I'm wondering, is that poem really famous and did Seigreid Sassoon do anything famous? Anyways, here's the poem. I copied it down while watching Trenches of Hell with the Closed Captioning on.

: : Dreamers
: : by Siegfreid Sassoon
: : Soldiers are citizens of death's gray land,
: : Drawing no Dividends from times tomorrows,
: : In the great hour of destiny they stand,
: : Each with his feuds, his jealousies, and sorrows
: : Soldiers are sworn to action, they must win
: : Some flaming fatal climax with their lives.
: : Soldiers are dreamers before the guns begin,
: : They think of fire-lit homes, clean beds and wives.
: : I see them in foul dug-outs gnawed by rats,
: : And in the ruined trenches lashed with rain,
: : Dreaming of things they did with balls and bats,
: : And mocked by helpless longing to regain.
: : Bank holidays, and picture shows, and spats
: : and going to the office in the train.

: Hey. I can't find that video anywhere, but I remember the poem from when it first aired. If that episode doesn't put you off war, it probably means you're without a soul. World War One permanently scarred a generation, both physically and mentally. The saddest thing is that we didn't learn a damned thing from it. Oh well, I have a feeling this post has gotten a bit too philosophical, so I'll end it here.

Yeah for sure that poem has a big anti-war message. That poem and the reading of the telegram at the very end of Saving Private Ryan definitely put you off war.
