The control system works quite well IMO. Basically, the Canyonlands level is a training/intro segment of the game, and there is a genuine Indy atmosphere for most of the game after that (although the ethereal ending is a little out of place).
Action will get a lot harder later on in the game - some levels have tons of Soviets to deal with, like Teotihucan and Palawan Temple, and there are a few great bits involving stuff like white-water rafting, jeep-driving.
The best level is probably the bonus 'secret map' level, which is inspired by the beginning of Raiders, so save up for the map throughout.
