I noticed the same thing right away on mine. I am an expert on flight jackets (amateur) and the Navy G-1 jacket has the same sort of pleats as the Indy Jacket. What they did in the Navy jackets is to go inside the jacket and attach two special wide elastic bands. One near the top, and one near the middle. The tension is adjusted to keep the pleats together, but no tighter.
I am pretty sure from observation, that the Jacket in Raiders had this feature. You can see it near the beginning when Sapito points out the tarantualas on Indy's back and he reaches around with the whip to brush them off. You can see the pleats are funtioning properly there. The pleats open up, and then spring back
With that in mind, I took my Wested to my local tailor and had her add this feature. Mine came out great. I really think it should be done by Wested, because jacket pleats make no sense without some way to keep them together. They invariably will hang apart, which in my opinion looks really stupid.
My jacket looks really great now. When I reach for something, the jacket opens up, and then comes together again. I cannot stress enough, this is what pleats are supposed to do!!
