SPF Didn't Cause the Failure

I don't think it was SPF's acting that was the downfall of the YIJCs.

I think it was the overestimation of the TV audience by Lucas and company.

Most people don't want education mixed in with their TV- they just want mind-numbing entertainment.

That's my humble opinion as to why the series didn't make it.
