Indy's tail shot off

I noticed the last time I viewed Last Crusade, what appears to be a blooper. When Indy and Henry Sr., were being chased by the Nazi airplanes after unhooking from the blimp, some scenes show the tail of the biplane shot up by Henry Sr., and some show the tail intact. I think that some scenes were filmed on a stage (close-ups) and some actual flying footage. Ay comments?
